Games and Gamification

Hello everyone , in this blog we gonna talk about games and education. But firstly what is gamification ?

"Gamification is the application of game design elements and game principles in non-game contexts. It can also be defined as a set of activities and processes to solve problems by using or applying the characteristics of game elements." via Wikipedia.

In our case, we will be applying games in education. Learners, especially young ones, get bored very easily nowadays. I constantly emphasize that the Z Generation is not interested in books and basic drills during their lessons. They are born into technology, they grow with it and they expect to learn with the help of it. It's a fact that the new generation kids' concentration span is relatively low and their point of view is different in many ways. That is why you hear sentences like "make learning fun" over and over again. There are lots of virtual environments where you can create your own world. I talked about Second Life before. There is also Minecraft for young learners. There are lots of opportunities to create games in the environment. For instance, If you want to teach your students routes you can make use of places like that. In an environment, you can give a direction card and each student can follow it. Then, they can find something in the place they go solve a riddle for example. Situations are endless. really liked the idea. It is authentic first of all. Secondly, all students can participate without going anywhere and getting any permission. They can practice their skills and learn while having fun.

SECOND LIFE

Hello everyone, in this post you will see my experiences about Second Life. Second Life is a virtual world that you can download on your computer and create your own life. For those newcomers, it's like Sims.

In second life firstly, you choose your avatar and start playing. There are lots of different worlds concept and so on. The main reason I'm mentioning this is not to teach you how to spare your free time but actually to integrate it to your teaching program.

Students can make lots of things in virtual worlds. I'm not only talking about vocabulary knowledge that they will obtain during the process but also the computer knowledge and lots of other grammar topics. Since avatars are moving and "living" in the environments, lots of stories can be made.

Virtual Reality

Virtual reality (VR) is an experience taking place within a computer-generated reality of immersive environments can be similar to or completely different from the real world. Applications of virtual reality can include entertainment (i.e. gaming) and educational purposes (i.e. medical or military training).

Virtual reality is an interactive computer-generated experience taking place in a simulated environment. The main purpose is to make people feel that they are really living that moment in any environment which is designed to that end. Actually, there are two types of VR. Firstly, the computer-screen or computer-enhanced VR. Majority of the people are familiar with this type as they are using it for a long time. Computer games might be a good example. Secondly, the one with virtual reality headset. Contemporary VR technology utilizes virtual reality headset. It is much more easy to make use of it, briefly it is very practical. When I used it, for that moment I felt as if I were at a different place apart from where I actually was. I was able to make movements which controlled my movements in that particular environment to be more clear I was flying an air-plane so when I turned left the air-plane turned left too so, as you can understand my movements and the air-plane's were synchronized.

Thinglink

Hello everyone, this post is about an application called Thinglink as you can guess from it's name the app provides you to link some other materials with an existing material. For instance, you can give links to a text or a website by clicking on a picture. From my point of view it is highly possible to make your students attracted.
